Revolutionizing Online Privacy Awareness: A Nonprofit UX/UI Web App

The use of data, big data, is something in trend, however, it is not something new, although it may seem so. It's a story that has been building its roots for decades and is getting deeper and deeper, which is why now is the right time to cut them off at a stroke, or at least be aware of how far they go.
I joined this ambitious non-profit project that has decided to do something about it and to change paradigms, inform and raise awareness about how our data is used.

Challenge

How can we create an interactive and accessible platform where users can be informed about how their data is handled on the internet and what they can do to counteract this?
Companies use unfriendly language, endless text and typography that is too small, knowing that the way information is presented will not be attractive to the user.
One of the problems about big data is that information about it is not so accessible to Mexican users, as in many cases there is a language barrier, and they use very technical language that is difficult for some people to understand.
So… we defined the goals we would have to achieve in order to solve this problem.

Results

We developed a mobile website MVP with a user-friendly interface, designed to educate users about how their data is utilized on the internet and empower them with knowledge on data protection. This platform offers valuable insights and practical guidance to help users navigate the complexities of online data usage in an intuitive and accessible way

Process

Research & Analysis: Conducted in-depth research using design thinking methodology, where we were able to empathise and get to know the users, their pains and needs, and also:
Dived into information on the internet, books and articles that talk about the use of data.
Explored and analysed other websites with similar content.
Synthesised the information we found.

Information Architecture: Based on the research findings, we restructured the app's navigation and content, prioritizing features and information according to user needs.

During the research process we interviewed 5 Mexican users between 23 and 31 years old, where we discovered the following:
Users use chrome, mostly because they have information saved for years (bookmarks, data fills) and they are forced to use google for their jobs.
Users are looking for platforms that are visual and have written content synthesised and clear.
Interest in Big Data increases when they receive remuneration in return, or a better job.Users have little information about how their data is handled because it is convenient for companies, as they can get their information without paying.

Wireframing & Prototyping: We engaged in a creative and collaborative process to generate innovative design concepts and user experiences.
We began by revisiting the user research findings to ensure a deep understanding of our target audience's needs and pain points. This knowledge served as the foundation for our ideation process, ensuring that our design concepts would directly address user concerns.
We conducted brainstorming sessions with team members, encouraging a free exchange of ideas. Each member brought their unique perspectives and insights to the table, fostering a diverse range of design concepts. Then we designed low-fidelity wireframes to visualize the new layout and navigation, iteratively refining them based on user feedback. Afterward, we built a high-fidelity, interactive prototype to test the design.

Usability Testing: We conducted usability tests with a diverse group of users to validate the design and identify areas for improvement. Based on the feedback, we made necessary adjustments to the design.

Visual Design & Style Guide: We fine-tuned the design of various UI elements, including buttons, icons, forms, and typography. Consistency in design elements across the website was a priority to maintain a cohesive and user-friendly appearance... and then testing again.

Constructive feedback helped us identify strengths and weaknesses in each concept, allowing us to focus on the most promising directions.

Conclusion

This project has been an invaluable learning experience for me, providing insights into working closely with clients or product owners and gaining a comprehensive understanding of the entire design process. I encountered and effectively addressed various challenges that emerged during the project, whether through creative problem-solving or by devising improved solutions. The journey was not only educational but also immensely enjoyable, particularly since it marked my inaugural collaboration with a genuine company as a UX/UI designer. I firmly believe that this endeavor represents a significant step forward, contributing to the establishment of a culture centered on data protection and responsible data utilization.
